Add the ability to have parent products and sub products

I think it is a common situation to have a "parent" product which can be sold as several other subproducts. This would be tied to one inventory level. Is it possible to add a subproduct level which ties to this parent products inventory? The current work around is to allow the subproducts to have negative inventories and adjust the parent products inventory
